Abigail Lane

Abigail Lane

Abigail Lane (born Penzance, UK) emerged in the late 1980s when she co-curated the notorious exhibition Freeze with fellow students such as Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas. She makes work in a range of media, including film, posters and sculptural installation.

In 2001 Film and Video Umbrella worked with Abigail Lane on the exhibition ‘Tomorrow’s World, Yesterday’s Fever’ (Mental Guests Incorporated). The exhibition was accompanied by a publication of the same name, and brought together three of the artist’s theatrical installations, ‘The Figment’ (1998), ‘The Inclination’ (2001) and ‘The Inspirator’ (2001). Lane’s work with Film and Video Umbrella continued her long-standing fascination with turn-of-the-century phenomena such as seances, freak shows, circuses, music hall and magic acts.

Lane’s work has been widely exhibited in the UK and abroad, with solo exhibitions at Victoria Miro Gallery, the ICA and Karsten Schubert, London; and Milton Keynes Gallery. Her work was part of the touring group exhibition Sensation, which compounded the impact of the YBA movement. She has also contributed to group exhibitions at Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; Institute of Contemporary Arts, Singapore; Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent; and White Cube, London.
