Alan Currall
Alan Currall (born Stoke-on-Trent 1964) makes video and computer-based works, often depicting himself or other protagonists talking directly to the camera. He employs the format of the video-diary to parody reality TV, hijacking its rhetoric to satirise sentimentality, creating overblown and suspect expressions and questioning the authenticity of emotional communication.
Currall was commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in 2000 to make ‘Encyclopaedia’. This took the format of a CD-ROM with contributions from the artist’s friends and family. ‘Encyclopaedia’ was exhibited in several galleries throughout the UK, including Stills, Edinburgh and Aspex, Portsmouth.
Currall’s work has been exhibited internationally, with solo presentations at The Jerwood Space, London; Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne; and Malmo Kunsthalle, Sweden. He has contributed to group shows at the Hayward, London; FACT, Liverpool; and CCA Glasgow. In 2003 Currall was shortlisted for the prestigious Beck’s Futures Prize and in 2004 he was selected for the Jerwood Artist’s Platform. He lives and works in Glasgow.
