Alexander and Susan Maris

Alexander and Susan Maris

Glasgow-based artists, Alexander and Susan Maris, have been working collaboratively since 1990. Their work concentrates on landscape, a sense of place and the role this can take in myth-making. They often choose to focus on sites with particular historical or environmental significance.

The Marises were first commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in 2007 to make ‘Silentium’. This dream-like video work was part of the touring group project Waterlog in 2007, which was accompanied by a major publication, Waterlog: Journeys Around an Exhibition. The work has subsequently been shown at Dilston Grove, London.

The artists have exhibited their work internationally, including at LABoral, Gijon, Asturias; CCA Glasgow; The Photographer’s Gallery, London; Stills, Edinburgh; and Real Gallery, New York. In 2006 they were awarded the Morton Award for lens-based media by the Royal Scottish Academy.
