Julie Henry first came to prominence in 1999 when she was selected for New Contemporaries. Working with video installation and photography, she documents and celebrates the subcultures and rituals of those who live to play hard far beneath the radar of celebrity endorsements and corporate sponsorship. The works tend to blur the boundaries between audience and performer, and call into question the performativity of class affiliation.

Henry worked with Film and Video Umbrella in 2002 on ‘This Sporting Life’, which was exhibited at Cornerhouse, Manchester; Impressions Gallery, York; and BCA Gallery, Bedford. The first monographic survey of her work, ‘Julie Henry’, was published by Film and Video Umbrella in 2002.

The artist’s work has been shown extensively in the UK and abroad, including exhibitions at Künstlerhaus Wien, Vienna; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton; Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; International Center of Photography, New York; and South London Gallery. Henry is represented by Wilkinson Gallery, London.
