Cornford & Cross

Cornford & Cross

Cornford & Cross were commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in 2000 to make ‘Childhood’s End’, a two-screen gallery film installation. This toured to the Norwich Gallery and Mead Gallery, Warwick University, and was accompanied by a Film and Video Umbrella publication, ‘Childhood’s End’.

Matthew Cornford and David Cross began their artistic collaboration while studying together at Saint Martins School of Art in 1987. Since then they have created a unique body of work comprising of interventions in the public realm and gallery installations. Often, these have been provocative, testing the limits of what shape artworks can take and how they contribute to our quality of life. Photography becomes central to the practice in that the works aren’t often experienced first hand and are therefore presented as a documentary images.

Solo exhibitions have included Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth; Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland; and a residency at the London School of Economics. Their work has also been exhibited at the South London Gallery and the Photographers’ Gallery, London; ArtSway, Hampshire; and the Bluecoat, Liverpool.
