Duncan Campbell
Duncan Campbell (born in Dublin, 1972) works predominantly in film and video installation. He is interested in the construction of meaning in the documentary format, as well as the ethics of representation. By using old and new footage together, Campbell breaks down and creates new narratives.
In 2009, Film and Video Umbrella worked with Duncan Campbell to commission ‘Make it new John’, a work combining archival footage with new material shot on 16mm film. This work continues to expand Campbell’s practice of re-contextualising found material, and of exploring documentary film. The piece recounts the rise and fall of the DeLorean car empire.
Campbell’s work has been widely exhibited, with solo exhibitions at Galerie Luis Campaa, Cologne; S1 Artspace Sheffield; Manifesta 5 European Biennial of Contemporary Art; and TART Contemporary, San Francisco. In 2008 he exhibited at Art Statements at Art Basel and won a Paul Hamlyn Award for visual art. He is represented by Hotel, London.
