George Barber
A pioneering figure of video art in the UK, George Barber (born 1958, Guyana), quickly established an international following with his 1980’s scratch video works, fast-moving, multi-layered and rhythmic pieces, distinguished by their vibrant colour, engaging humour and sophisticated sound and image manipulation. In the early 1990’s, Barber’s work shifted in a more low-tech direction, and also showcased his talent as a writer; a facility for language that has been seen to typically creative effect in radio and print, via documentaries for Radio 4 and contributions to ‘The Independent Magazine’. Visually striking and sometimes disturbing, Barber’s work often presents witty and engaging narratives concerned with human behaviour in unusual situations.
Film and Video Umbrella first worked with George Barber in 1994, on the showcase ‘This Side of the Channel’. Subsequent programmes including his work were ‘Unlimited Edition’ (1999) and ‘Single Shot’ (2006). In 2006, Barber was commissioned to make the major work ‘Automotive Action Painting’, which went on to win First Prize at the 24th Hamburg International Short Film Festival in June 2008. Film and Video Umbrella have also published a book on the artist’s work, as part of the Minigraph series.
Barber’s work has featured in international exhibitions and screenings, including presentations at Tate Britain, ICA, London and numerous international film festivals.
