Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone
In 1993 Film and Video Umbrella commissioned Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone to make Passagen. This interactive multi-media installation was the beginning of their ongoing collaboration together. Subsequently, in 1999 they were commissioned to make the video installation Wall of Death.
Ellard and Johnstone make artworks at the intersection between cinema and digital technology. Their work belies a fascination with spectacle and the way that space is constructed by the projected image. In works such as Wall of Death these preoccupations are extended into an exploration of how the viewer becomes a performer in an immersive video environment.
The artists have exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, with selected exhibitions at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Tate, Liverpool; Kiasma, Helsinki; Ikon, Birmingham; The Photographers’ Gallery, London; Cornerhouse, Manchester; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. They both live and work in London.
