Jananne Al-Ani

Jananne Al-Ani

Jananne Al-Ani’s haunting work in video and photography is distinguished by its evocative portraits and intimate and compelling narratives. Al-Ani’s practice has been particularly concerned with the uncertainties of personal histories as constructed through narratives of memory. Her work explores the complex ambiguities and power relationships that are part of the processes of cultural contact, and she has created a series of works involving family members that explore the multiple layers of experience and identity.

Film and Video Umbrella first worked with Jananne Al-Ani in 2002 as part of the web project ‘Identinet’. Subsequently the work ‘The Visit’ was commissioned in 2004, and accompanied by a publication, Jananne Al-Ani, the first monographic survey of the artist’s work.

Al-Ani has exhibited widely in Britain and abroad. Her work was featured in the Whitstable Biennale 2008, whilst ‘The Visit’ was presented at Art Now, Tate Britain, London and the Norwich Gallery. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Casino Luxembourg, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, MoMA, New York, ICA, London and Museum of Modern Art, Vienna. Al-Ani was born in Iraq in 1966 and lives and works in London.
