Johan Grimonprez

Johan Grimonprez

Johan Grimonprez (born in Belgium, 1962) mixes reality and fiction in his work and presents history as open to manipulation and re-interpretation. His work plunders the resources of film, advertising, news broadcasts and popular culture to highlight the proliferation of information and the subjectivity of its interpretations.

In 2004 Film and Video Umbrella commissioned Grimonprez to make ‘Looking for Alfred’. This was a large-scale project concentrating on Alfred Hitchcock’s cameos in his own films. The work was accompanied by a publication of the same name, and toured to The Photographers’ Gallery, London; De La Warr Pavilion, Sussex; and Mead Gallery, Warwick.

The artist’s work has been widely exhibited, with solo presentations at Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; and Santa Monica Museum of Art, Los Angeles. Group exhibitions include Centre Pompidou, Paris; Hayward Gallery, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; and Documenta X, Kassel. Grimonprez is represented by Sean Kelly, New York.
