Marion Coutts

Marion Coutts

Marion Coutts works in sculpture, film and video, with the moving image works often being presented in sculptural form. The work transforms readymade material, exploring the life of objects and everyday behaviour. In doing so, she gives mythological status to what was previously mundane.

In 2003, Film and Video Umbrella commissioned Coutts to make ‘Everglade’. This video installation marked a significant development in the artist’s practice, and was accompanied by the first major publication on her work, entitled ‘Marion Coutts’.

Coutts has had solo exhibitions at the Chisenhale Gallery and Wellcome Galleries, London; Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge; firstsite, Colchester; and the Bluecoat, Liverpool. She has contributed to group shows at Helsinki Kunsthalle, Finland; Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol; Vitra Design Museum, Berlin; and The Drawing Room, London. In 2001 she was artist in residence at Tate Liverpool and in 2003 to 2004 she was the Kettle’s Yard Artist Fellow at St John’s College, Cambridge. Her work can be found in collections including Arts Council England and the Contemporary Art Society.
