Michael Curran
Michael Curran (born Scotland, 1963) works in film, video, installation and sculpture, exploring the relationship between moving image and physical space. His practice explores the themes of spectacle and performance, often subjecting recorded footage to radical temporal shifts, creating rhythms and repetition, which call the narrative structure into question.
Film and Video Umbrella first worked with Curran in 1994 as part of the international video showcase ‘Fresh’. In 1998 his work was part of the programme ‘Unlimited Edition’. In 2000, Curran collaborated with Imogen Stidworthy on the commission ‘Closing/ Close by’. This meditation on the power of storytelling was accompanied by a publication of the same name. Curran’s work was also the focus of a separate book, ‘Michael Curran’, part of the Minigraph series.
Curran’s acclaimed work has been widely exhibited, with selected exhibitions at Matt’s Gallery, Tate Britain and Camden Arts Centre, London; Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool; SMART Project Space, Amsterdam; and praxisKUNST, Vienna. He lives and works in London.
