Monika Oechsler
Monika Oechsler makes video, sound and installation works, which display a compelling fascination with social role-play, collective behaviour and interactive group dynamics. In using specific locations and contexts, Oechsler creates improvised situations in which the viewer is immersed in the physical experience of the installation, whether this is aural or visual.
Oechsler’s work was included in Film and Video Umbrella’s 1996 programme ‘Never a Dumb Moment’. Subsequently her work ‘High Achievers’ was included in ‘Unlimited Edition’ in 2001. This touring programme was a showcase of work by prominent and influential artists, and highlighted the tendencies in artists’ film and video in the few years up to the point when it was curated.
Oechsler has exhibited her work internationally, with solo shows at Site Gallery, Sheffield and Lentos Kunstmuseum, Linz. Notable group exhibitions include those at Cell Project Space and Camden Arts Centre, London; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Bergen Kunsthall; Tate Liverpool; and the 6th Sharjah International Art Biennial.
