Simon Robertshaw In this multimedia installation, artist Simon Robertshaw worked with video technology as well as found objects and documents to explore issues of mental illness and hospitalisation.
'Trace Elements' consisted of six metal-framed beds arranged in a row. At the end of each bed was a miniature video monitor playing footage of (real-life) inmates of mental asylums. Both the beds and the video footage had been unearthed by Robertshaw at some of the last remaining Victorian county asylums. 'Trace Elements' further explored the artist's interest in the history of medicine and psychiatry as well as his integration of video as a sculptural object into his work.
