Paul Rooney

Set on a commercial freighter mysteriously marooned within touching distance of land, Paul Rooney's seven-minute handheld travelling shot, restlessly circling round the deck of the boat, evokes a state of personal limbo, whose rising anxieties are reflected in an elegantly dissonant Brecht/Weill-influenced soundtrack and in a half-whispered, half-sung monologue haunted by memory and history.

Paul Rooney was born in Liverpool and trained at Edinburgh College of Art. He was a founder member of artist group Common Culture who exhibited at East International in 1999.
Rooney primarily works with video and sound and has shown recently at Kunst-Werke, Berlin and Baltic, Gateshead. He has recently been commissioned by Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and Site Gallery, Sheffield. Rooney recently curated a show for Gasworks Gallery, London and in 2003 he was the winner of the first Art Prize North. His work is currently showing in British Art Show 6, which is touring the UK throughout 2006.
