Business as Usual 2001

Carey Young

'Business as Usual' was the first major touring exhibition of works by Carey Young, including a number of new commissions.

Business as Usual

Young makes work which explores a world increasingly controlled by globalised business interests. Largely inspired by her own experience of working within the corporate sector, she uses a variety of media including video, performance and found tools and processes from the business world. The pieces that comprise 'Business as Usual' subtly examine the collapsing categories between cultural and commercial systems, creating a variety of scenarios in which the artist appears to use her own identity as a form of shorthand to examine our slippage into a world which is increasingly 'becoming-corporate'.

The first monograph on Carey Young, entitled 'Carey Young, Incorporated' is published by Film and Video Umbrella to accompany this show, and includes essays by Alex Farquharson, Jeremy Millar and Liam Gillick. Carey Young lives and works in London. Having graduated with an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in 1997, she has shown internationally since 1997, most notably at fig-1, London; Ausgetraumt, Secession, Vienna, and in Media_City, part of the Seoul Biennale 2000. Her work has been featured in Art Monthly, artext and Flash Art.
