Drains, Cables, and Cuts

‘Drains, Cables, and Cuts’ was a photographic/video installation by Annabel Howland comprising her signature cut-out images, a series of related landscape photographs, and a digitally animated film. The film, ‘Cut Drains, Charts, Creeks and Cuts’ (like the additional animations presented on her accompanying website) proceeds along lines first rehearsed in Howland’s cut-out photos: highlighting both the natural contours and the man-made features of the landscape and then meticulously re-tracing them so that they stand out in their overlapping, intersecting complexity.

Commissioned as part of the group project ‘Silicon Fen’, Howland’s work finds an ideal subject in the stark, sharply delineated terrain of this part of East Anglia and responds with a series of vivid images which reveal both its intricate geometry and its haunting beauty.

The King’s Lynn staging of ‘Drains, Cables, and Cuts’ received additional support from the Mondriaan Foundation and the Fonds voor BKVB.
