Sophie Hoyle, Aphonia (2024)

We’re delighted to launch FVU’s latest online commission by artist Sophie Hoyle, Aphonia (2024), on FVU Watch. The short film explores concepts of agency and presence in relation to aural/oral communication, addressing a need to widen understanding of diverse experiences and (dis)abilities — and how we can create spaces for a diversity of voices to be heard and felt.

Read Jinan Coulter’s newly commissioned essay produced in response to the film HERE, which takes the nuance of speech as a starting point to question broader themes of language and agency explored within the work.

Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella.
