In response to Michael.’s commission cleave to the BLACK for Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022, Michael. invited artist Ashley Holmes who designed the sound for the installation to join him for a conversation.
Michael.’s installation cleave to the BLACK depicts through a moving-image triptych, the continuing legacy of Black male experience. This event explored the references such as music, text, and spoken word that influenced Michael. in the making of the work, alongside Ashley’s responses, questions and references in reaction to the work.

In addition to a screening of cleave to the BLACK and the discussion with Ashley Holmes, Michael. led a short physical movement workshop used during the making of cleave to the BLACK, which invited attendees to move in slow motion across the room.
The Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022 are a collaboration between Jerwood Arts and Film and Video Umbrella, in partnership with Leeds Art Gallery.
