A K Dolven’s Film and Video Umbrella commission ‘it could happen to you’ (2001) is one of a series of video portraits by this acclaimed Norwegian artist that are based on classic paintings by Edvard Munch. While echoing the framing of the original composition, they reverse its dynamics to put women, or a female perspective, centre stage. In advance of a major new commission by Dolven for the North West Cambridge site of Cambridge University, this special screening of ‘it could happen to you’ and other portrait works by the artist at Newnham College in Cambridge alludes to women’s place in the history of the University (and in art history in general), and the progress both on campus and within wider society that has enabled their voice to be increasingly heard. Following the screening the artist will be in conversation with Kettle's Yard Director, Andrew Nairne.
Programmed and presented by Film and Video Umbrella. Supported by Arts Council England. With thanks to Wilkinson Gallery and special thanks to the Norwegian Embassy, London.
